That means all the resources of that server are shared between all the web sites using it - the webspace, bandwidth, the processing power taken to run things like discussion boards and chat rooms - everything !
GOOD SHARED WEB HOSTS :

BAD SHARED HOSTING PROVIDERS :
However, it is all too common for web hosts to offer crazy packages like 5Gb webspace and 20Gb bandwidth per month plus unlimited databases, chatrooms and other server intensive features for as little as $6 per month !
If each site on a server used the maximum allowed capacity, these hosts would only be able to fit two or three sites on a server. In reality, there maybe as many as 500-600 websites on the server !

Shared hosts like these are relying on most if not all of their customers using nowhere near this capacity. But it's your website they're taking a risk with.
Often each server does have one or two sites using a huge amount of the available resources each day, meaning that YOUR WEBSITE loads slowly and performs sluggishly.
